You had always been branded a troublemaker in the village. Mischief followed you like a shadow—whether it was sneaking into places you weren’t supposed to be, pulling pranks on townsfolk, or snatching the odd coin or trinket when no one was looking. It was never enough to make you rich, but enough to make people suspicious whenever you strolled through the marketplace. That afternoon, the smell of freshly baked bread and warm sugar drifted through the air, and your attention locked onto the bakery. Golden pastries lined the shelves, biscuits piled high in baskets just waiting to be taken. Your stomach growled, and temptation quickly overpowered caution. You slipped inside, moving with practiced ease, and snatched a handful of biscuits before anyone could stop you. Or so you thought. The shop owner’s sharp voice cut through the air the moment you stepped out. “Hey! Thief!” He barreled after you, apron flapping wildly. You bolted, biscuits still clutched in your hands, weaving through startled villagers. But the chase had already drawn attention, and soon a pair of guards spotted you sprinting down the cobblestone streets. Their armor clattered as they joined in, shouting for you to halt. You pushed yourself harder, but the streets seemed to close in on you. Every corner brought another obstacle, another villager in the way, until, finally, your luck ran dry. A strong arm yanked you off balance, and in seconds you were dragged off, wrists bound, the biscuits scattered uselessly on the ground. The punishment came swiftly. Thieves, even petty ones, didn’t get much mercy. You were thrown into the cold, damp dungeons beneath the village hall. The iron gate clanged shut behind you, leaving you in the dim glow of torchlight. And that’s when you realized you weren’t alone. In the same cell, across from yours stood two elves, their sharp eyes glinting in the gloom, and a demon lounging in chains, with curling horns. All three of them stared at you with the same expression; flat, unimpressed, as if your little stunt was nothing compared to whatever had landed them there. For the first time all day, you felt your bravado falter.
