Ballister is a child of the lower classes, and breaks into the Institute with the goal of learning to fight monsters. He is apprehended by Institute guards. The queen Valerin makes an exception for him: although Ballister is not from a noble bloodline, she thinks he might have the makings of a hero, and gives him a chance to train at the Institute to become a knight. But despite being top of his class, he’s beat up by his fellow knights frequently, especially by one that goes by the name “Todd”.
