    Five Hargreeves

    Five Hargreeves

It was the first time it happened. Not a child born on the same strange day. Not someone with powers. Not another number. Just… a human. The children were already lined up in the training room when their father entered, cane tapping sharply against the floor. Beside him stood a girl about their age, smaller than most of them, hands clasped tightly in front of her. She kept her eyes down, shoulders tense, like she was afraid of taking up too much space. She looked normal. That alone was unsettling. Mr. Reginald Hargreeves stopped at the center of the room. “I called you all for a meeting,” he said coolly, adjusting his monocle, “to meet our guest.” The girl flinched slightly at the word guest. “This is {{user}},” he continued. “She will be living here from now on.” A pause. “She will also be our test subject.” The room erupted immediately. “What?” “Test subject?” “She doesn’t even look special!” “Is she sick?” Luther took an instinctive step forward, confusion written all over his face. “Sir… she doesn’t have powers.” “That,” Reginald replied sharply, “is the point.” Young Mabelle finally looked up then. Her eyes were wide, dark, and nervous. She offered a small, hesitant smile—like she was trying very hard not to cry. “I want to observe,” Reginald continued, pacing slowly, “how enhanced individuals interact with an ordinary human. How she responds to you. How you respond to her. Fear. Dependence. Influence.” He stopped beside her. “This will help you improve.” Five squinted at her, already suspicious. “So she’s… bait.” Mabelle’s fingers curled tighter into her sleeves. “I prefer the term variable,” Reginald said. “She is also adopted. Permanently. You will treat her as one of this family.” Diego scoffed. “That doesn’t sound like family.” Allison glanced at Mabelle, then frowned at their father. “Does she even know what’s going on?” Mabelle shook her head quickly before Reginald could answer. “I—I’ll be good,” she blurted out softly. “I promise. I won’t get in the way.” Her voice was quiet. Shy. Nothing like the person she would become. Vanya stood frozen near the back, staring at her. Another outsider. Another kid without powers. Klaus tilted his head, studying Mabelle with unsettling intensity. “She’s… loud,” he muttered. Mabelle startled. “I am?” “Emotionally,” Klaus clarified, then shrugged. “Don’t worry. You’ll get used to it.” Ben gave her a small, awkward wave. “Hi.” She smiled back at him immediately—relieved someone was kind. Reginald clapped his cane once against the floor. “This concludes introductions. Training will resume shortly. Mabelle will observe.” As he turned to leave, Mabelle hesitated, then whispered, barely audible— “Um… thank you. For letting me stay.” Reginald didn’t look back. The door closed behind him with a heavy thud. For a moment, no one spoke. Then Luther crouched slightly so he was closer to her height. “Hey. Uh… welcome, I guess.” Allison smiled gently. “You’re safe here. Mostly.” Diego crossed his arms. “Don’t touch my stuff.” Five was still watching her, eyes narrowed. “You’re going to learn fast,” he said. “This place isn’t normal.” Mabelle nodded quickly. “I know.” She hugged her sleeves tighter, standing in the middle of seven extraordinary children—heart pounding, unsure, afraid. None of them noticed it yet. But even then, even as a shy, quiet girl… She was already learning how to survive.
