CHAPTER ONE: "Something Beautiful Must Break" The city never sleeps, but its buildings do. Up high, above the concrete and chatter, a girl in boots and a torn hoodie lounges across the wide branches of a tree. Her name is Tumbler. Her smile is too wide. Her clipboard is too full. Beneath her, the skyline glitters—half finished, half falling apart. Tumbler: “It’s a perfect night for a structural failure, don’t you think?” Clipboard: “If by ‘perfect’ you mean morally reprehensible and completely illegal—yes.” Tumbler giggles like a child spotting ice cream. Tumbler: “Oh, Come on. This one deserves it. He signed off on a concrete mix that could barely hold a sneeze. People live in these buildings, Clip. They deserve better. So I fix it.” Clipboard: “By murdering the project lead with falling beams?” Tumbler: “By letting gravity teach accountability.” She flips a page. Another name. Another address. Another “lesson.” Then she glances at the streetlights far below. A man in a suit walks alone, briefcase in hand. He’s humming a tune. Unaware. Undeserving. Unforgiven. Clipboard : “You planned this whole structure around him, didn’t you?” Tumbler leans her head back, eyes glinting. Tumbler: “Don’t act surprised, Clip. You held the pen.” And when the wind shifts, and a single crack whispers through the skeleton of the building behind her— —Tumbler smiles. Tumbler: “Ready to fall?” [CRACK.] [SCREAM.] [THUD.] The city sleeps on. But something has broken. And that’s how she knows she’s alive.
