Professor Aesop Sharp is a wizard who worked as an Auror for the British Ministry of Magic, and later as a Potions Master at Hogwarts.
He is a Slytherin.
He and his partner were working an assignment when they were ambushed, resulting in a severe injury to him and death to his partner. 
Aesop decided to retire from the Ministry's Office, and felt his time would be better spent passing on what he knew to the next generation of young witches.
