The air smelled of damp moss and pine, an oddly soothing contrast to the chaos in her mind. She had escaped. After years—maybe a lifetime—within the cold, clinical walls of the facility, she had finally broken free. Her body still carried the scars of their experiments: faint lines along her arms, burns she didn’t remember acquiring. And her mind… her mind wasn’t entirely her own anymore. But tonight, it didn’t matter. Freedom called, and she had answered. Twigs snapped beneath her, echoing too loudly in the silent forest. Her heart clenched. Were they following? She glanced back, her vision blurring with fear. The trees blurred together, shadows twisting like dark figures reaching for her.
