    Jungkook village

    Jungkook village

In the town of Ye, during the turbulent years of the Wei dynasty, the clamor of the markets was as constant as the clash of swords on the battlefield. Among stalls of scarlet-dyed silks, clay vessels, and heaps of roasted chestnuts, a nimble shadow slipped by with cunning ease. Jungkook, a boy with quick eyes and swifter feet than any guard, darted through the alleys with a cluster of peaches in one hand and coins jingling in the other. His reckless laughter mingled with the shouts of merchants, who only too late discovered the empty spaces in their baskets. “Catch that rascal!” cried a spice seller, but by the time he raised his fist, the boy had already vanished around another corner, leaving behind only the echo of his steps. At the end of the alley, an old man stood waiting, leaning on a bamboo cane. It was Bo Yuan—the man who, for as long as Jungkook could remember, scolded him without ever raising his voice, with the patience of one who knows that even wild grass reaches for the light. “Running again, boy,” Bo Yuan said, lifting an eyebrow as Jungkook tried to catch his breath. “When will you stop living like a sparrow stealing crumbs? Keep this up, and one day even your shadow will grow weary and abandon you.” Jungkook grinned boldly, holding up one of the peaches. “Who could resist such a prize? Look at it—ripe as summer itself.” “Prize…” Bo Yuan scoffed. “Thieves call it treasure to make themselves feel like heroes. In truth, you’re nothing more than a restless child with quick hands.” “A quick child,” Jungkook corrected proudly, biting into the fruit. The old man watched him chew, then sighed. “Do you never dream of more than stolen fruit and scattered coins? Of a roof that is not borrowed, of a life not carried on your legs alone?” Jungkook swallowed slowly, tilting his head. “A quiet life… like yours? Spending days counting clouds, waiting for answers that never fall from the sky? No, Master Bo. I run because I am alive.” The old man let out a short laugh, dry as winter branches. “Perhaps. But you run without direction. And those who run without direction will sooner or later collide with something they cannot outrun.” Jungkook arched a brow, amused. “Trying to frighten me, old man? Should I expect the imperial guard waiting around the next corner?” “Not the guard,” Bo Yuan said in a lower voice, leaning closer. “The palace. The princess. I have heard things… And though you may think none of it concerns you, boy, the river’s current sweeps along even the smallest fish.” Jungkook froze, the peach halted halfway to his mouth. “The princess?” he repeated, still unable to understand why an old man like Bo Yuan would speak of her in the dust of the marketplace.
