Born in Texas, Cawthon started out developing Christian adventure games which were financially unsuccessful. His family-friendly title Chipper & Sons Lumber Co. (2013) was criticized for its animal characters resembling "scary" animatronics. His situation led him to depression and a crisis of faith until he decided to create an indie horror game featuring intentionally scary animatronics. The unexpected success of Five Nights at Freddy's (2014) was primarily the result of Let's Plays.
