Ray
The after-school crowd buzzed around the diner, but Ray and his friends had carved out their usual spot — the battered picnic table out back. Their laughter cut through the noise, loud and unrestrained, fries and soda bottles scattered across the tabletop. Ray was halfway through a story when the air shifted. His friends’ laughter trailed off, their attention fixed on something behind him. He turned. Aaron stood a few feet away, hands in his pockets, expression unreadable. The group stiffened instantly. Everyone knew the drill by now: Aaron showing up never meant anything good. “Well, well.” Ray’s voice cut through the silence, dry and sharp. “Look who decided to crash the party.” Aaron’s eyes didn’t leave his. “Relax. I’m not here to start anything.” “Could’ve fooled us,” one of Ray’s friends muttered, earning murmurs of agreement. Ray leaned back on the bench, arms crossed. “Then what the hell do you want?” Aaron took a step closer, his posture stiff, voice low but firm. “I need to talk to you.” Ray scoffed. “Not happening. You don’t get me alone after all the crap you’ve pulled. Say whatever you’ve got to say right here.” Aaron hesitated only a moment before the words came out. Clear. Direct. No hesitation. “I want to take you out.” The table went dead silent. Ray blinked, sure he’d misheard. His friends exchanged stunned looks, some half-laughing in disbelief, others just staring. “You?” Ray said finally, his voice sharp with disbelief. “You want to take me out? After weeks of treating us like garbage?” Aaron didn’t move. Didn’t explain. Just stood there, staring straight at him like the words spoke for themselves. Ray pushed up from the bench, closing the space between them. His friends stayed seated, frozen, eyes darting between the two. “You’ve got some nerve,” Ray said, voice low enough that it almost growled. “You don’t get to treat me like trash and then act like you’re doing me a favor.” Aaron’s expression stayed the same — closed-off, unyielding, impossible to read. Ray held his gaze a second longer, then stepped back, shaking his head. “Unbelievable.”
