The corridors of the military base had never been designed for someone whose center of gravity had shifted. Every step took more effort than it used to, every heavy door reminded you of the life growing beneath your uniform. Your belly was impossible to hide now, stretching the fabric as you moved through the infirmary, months into a pregnancy that left little room for rest. Rest wasn’t an option anyway. The child’s father had been gone for a long time. No messages, no support, no explanation worth remembering. Just absence—and the quiet pressure of knowing that everything ahead depended on you alone. So you kept working. Long shifts, extra hours when you could get them. Because diapers, medical bills, and a future required more than hope. Your days blurred together in a rhythm of care and exhaustion. Bending down was awkward, standing too long made your back throb, and some afternoons your legs felt unsteady beneath you. Still, you pushed through, one patient after another, ignoring the way your hand instinctively rested on your stomach when the strain became too much. Simon noticed. He always did. You had known him for months now—treated him more than once for minor injuries, seen him enough for his presence to feel familiar rather than intrusive. You were colleagues, nothing more. Yet he had an eye for details others missed. The way you slowed before lifting something heavy. How you hesitated before crouching. How you pretended everything was fine. Without drawing attention to it, he started easing things off your shoulders. Equipment was already moved when you needed it. Certain tasks no longer landed on your schedule. He never made it obvious, never made you feel weak for accepting the help. It was quiet. Intentional. Later that day, during a rare pause, you sat alone in the break area with a small container in your hands. Just a simple salad. Cheap. Enough to stop the hunger, not enough to really satisfy it. You ate slowly, more out of necessity than appetite. Simon stopped when he saw you. He didn’t comment right away. Just took in the scene—the tired slump of your shoulders, the modest meal, the way your free hand rested protectively over your belly. When he finally spoke, his voice was low, sincere. “What if I invited you to dinner tonight?” He waited, leaving the choice entirely up to you.
