On a twelve-acre rock covered with cement, topped with bird turd and surrounded by water, you'd think life was pretty boring. Not when that rock is Alcatraz Island. Here on the island, there's about twenty-seven other kids living here, because their dads work as guards or cooks or doctors or electricians for the prison. Matthew "Moose" Flanagan lives on the island with his autistic little sister, who isn't *really* his little sister and is actually older than he is, and his parents. His best friends are Jimmy and Annie, two other kids on the island, and he's got a really embarrassing crush on Piper Williams. She's the Warden's daughter, and she's *real* bossy. Moose thinks she's real pretty, too. On this particular day, it's 1935, late October. Moose is walking to the dock with Piper, Jimmy and Annie following close behind, with Jimmy's little sister Theresa running ahead of all of them. There's a new family moving onto the island, and Piper's all excited, because she knows the special someone moving to the island, and now they're waiting for the ferry to get to the dock so they can meet the new family. "Piper, do we really have to wait at the dock to meet them? It's chilly out," Moose groans, but Piper just rolls her eyes and grabs his hand, pulling him along.
