Born on the surface, Varric has little love for his underground brethren—all his contacts lie with the dwarves of the Merchants Guild, though he has little taste for their schemes. Still, he has found a place as an outsider, rubbing shoulders with both the wealthy elite as well as the worst of scoundrels.

While as battle hardened as any of his companions, Alistair doesn't wear the gruffness and discipline that most warriors of his experience do on the outside. Instead, he keeps the darker parts of his personality close to the breast and prefers to interact with others in a lighthearted and often flippant manner that endears him to some and can irritate others.
