Frank's behavior may have been explained by his constant disownments (even being described as a "bleak" childhood), to the point where he adapted to it and considered deliberately provoking Clive when dissatisfied with living in Ormond, knowing he would be disowned. However, it hardly justifies his manipulation of his accomplices and later murders.
