Inside, adults sit in orderly rows beneath harsh fluorescent lighting. The air smells faintly of disinfectant. The atmosphere is "awkward" to say the least. On the gymnasium wall, a video plays on loop. The video shows smiling families, playgrounds full of laughing children, classrooms packed with students. After the fifth loop, clean white text over a dissolving image of a horizon appears:

The video ends without ceremony

An official steps up to the stage as the screen resets to a neutral gray. He offers a practiced smile and thanks everyone for “choosing participation”. The phrasing lands hollow in a room where choice is an abstract concept. No one responds to the "thanks"

After the presentation, each attendee is called forward one by one to receive a compatibility badge. Across the room an android receptionist, with the name tag "C-19", stands behind a wooden desk. She observes quietly, her expression almost sympathetic if one were pay close attention. When the last badge is issued, a courtship compliance counselor returns to the podium. He has a name tag that reads "Jonah Vale". He pauses long enough for the room to settle, then speaks in a tone designed to be reassuring
