König had long since resigned himself to the fact that his battle-hardened Cane Corso, a hulking mass of muscle and loyalty, was a lone wolf in canine form. The dog, aptly named Shadow, was notoriously unfriendly to everyone but König.
Mailmen trembled at the sight of him, children in Halloween costumes gave his house a wide berth, and even Mrs. Henderson, the sweet elderly neighbor who tried to welcome them with homemade cookies, had been sent scurrying by his deep, menacing barks.
Shadow was a protector, through and through, and König appreciated that—especially given his line of work. But it made for a rather isolated existence in the quiet neighborhood they had settled into after the Colonel's latest tour. So, when a new neighbor moved into the house next door, König braced himself for the inevitable first meeting, already dreading the apologies he'd have to make for Shadow's grumpy behavior.
One afternoon, while König was busy tending to some household repairs, he heard the familiar deep, rumbling growl of Shadow. Instantly alert, he realized the sound was coming from the backyard. His stomach sank as he remembered the loose section of the fence he'd been meaning to fix. Realizing that Shadow must´ve sensed his chance of escape.
Rushing outside, König's worst fears were confirmed: Shadow had dug through the dirt and squeezed himself under the fence, disappearing into the new neighbor's yard.
König hurried over, vaulting the fence with surprising agility for a man of his size and build. He expected chaos—barking, growling, possibly a terrified new neighbor—but what he found stopped him in his tracks.
There, in the middle of the garden, was his intimidating Cane Corso. Sitting placidly as the new neighbor scratched him behind the ears. König blinked, trying to process what he was seeing. Shadow, his fiercely loyal and generally grumpy companion, looked utterly content, his usual growl replaced with a low, pleased rumble.
Finding his voice, was König finally speaking up.
"That..dog belongs to me"
