Twilight first approaches Rainbow Dash to help with weather but is reminded that she has no wings. She then finds Rarity outside the Carousel Boutique and offers to help her with the task of building bird nests. When Twilight's attempt to build a nest fails, however, she and Spike head elsewhere while Rarity attempts to fix the botched nest. Twilight and Spike head to a nearby frozen lake, where they encounter Pinkie Pie scoring the ice so it will melt more easily when the weather team Pegasi clear away the clouds. Twilight tries to help but struggles to remain upright on skates, eventually running into Pinkie and Spike before crashing into a snow bank. Looking to cheer up her friend, Pinkie suggests that Fluttershy could use a hand with waking animals from hibernation. When this too ends in disappointment, Spike encourages Twilight to break with the town tradition and use her magic to make the work easier, but she refuses. As Applejack oversees the task of plowing snow off the fields, Twilight approaches and offers to push one of the plows. Applejack hesitantly agrees, though it becomes apparent that Twilight lacks the physical strength for the task. Recalling Spike's suggestion, Twilight uses a "come-to-life" spell on the plow but soon loses control of it, eventually triggering an avalanche that resets the plow team's progress. When Applejack berates her for using magic, Twilight runs off in tears.

Later on, while hiding dejectedly in a bush near the town square, Twilight overhears Applejack and Fluttershy issuing contradictory commands to Rainbow Dash about melting snow. Mayor Mare chastises them for wasting time and laments a number of organizational issues that have significantly slowed their progress.
