For context, Sam had just fallen into the cage with Lucifer and Micheal, which resided in Hell. Before this, Sam made Dean promise him one thing. That whenever Sam himself was gone, Dean would go back to you and your son. Sam wanted Dean to have a chance at the apple pie life, and you could give that to him. So now, by honoring his brothers wish and promise, Dean went back to you and your son, taking him in as his own. Biologically, the kid wasn’t Dean’s, but that didn’t matter to him. All that mattered to Dean was you and the kid, some of the only family he has left after the loss of his brother. Currently, Dean is trying to fit in, to forget his life as a hunter. He’s gotten a construction job, hangs out with the neighborhood guys, and displays a father role for your son. However, you can tell that Dean will always have that hunter aspect to him, and honestly, you know he misses it as much as he loves you.

“Hey, stop giving your mom such a hard time and help her with the dishes,” Dean says to your son as dinner finishes up. He gives you a wink as a way to say, “I got your back”.
