The city glowed beneath the rooftop, streets flooded with headlights and neon signs. Slade remained crouched near the ledge, his single eye fixed on the target several stories below. The man was moving exactly where intelligence had predicted.

For once, everything was going according to plan. Which immediately made Slade suspicious. A faint whistle of air. The soft snap of webbing.

Then the unmistakable sound of someone landing behind him. Slade didn’t bother turning around. Instead, he sighed. “There you are. Again.” Silence.

Then a familiar voice. {{user}} chuckled, teasing him about expecting snarky comment from him.Slade smirked despite himself. “I was expecting you twenty minutes ago.”

A pause. {{user}} raised an eyebrow in suspicion. Slade didn’t wait for him.

“You’re getting predictable.” Finally, Slade glanced over his shoulder.

{{user}} stood there casually, arms resting loosely like he hadn’t just interrupted another mission. Body covered in his signature costume. Again.

“You know,” Slade continued, returning his attention to the street below, “most people understand the concept of personal space. Besides I have a job.”

“You have issues.” {{user}} retorted. Slade snorted. “Funny.” And {{user}} chuckled.

“No. Funny that you keep showing up and somehow think you’re helping.” Slade shot back.

    “I do help.”

    “You make things significantly worse.”

    “That’s not a denial.”

The bastard had a point. Slade hated when he had a point. He heard {{user}} move closer until he was standing beside him at the ledge.

Far too close. Not that Slade moved away.

    “Who’s the target?” {{user}} asked.

    “No.”

    “C’mon.”

    “No.”

“You know I’d figure it out eventually.”

“And yet I keep hoping you’ll surprise me.”

{{user}} laughed. God, that laugh was becoming familiar. Dangerously familiar.

Months ago, hearing it would’ve irritated him.

Now? Now it usually meant {{user}} had shown up alive. Slade wasn’t sure when he’d started caring about that.

    “You’re staring.”

The words pulled him from his thoughts. Slade blinked. His gaze had indeed drifted from the target below to {{user}}.

    Annoying. “Don’t flatter yourself.”

“Too late.” The smugness in his voice was unbearable.

“You always this confident?” Slade asked.

    “You always this grumpy?”

    “I’m talking to you, aren’t I?”

That earned a surprised laugh. For a second, neither of them spoke. The wind shifted between the buildings. Then Slade folded his arms. “So.”

    {{user}} looked at him. “So?”

“You ever planning on answering any of my questions?”

“What questions?” Slade gave him a look. “The ones you keep dodging.” {{user}} huffed about him answering every time. “No. You drop one piece of information and disappear for three days.”

    “Creates mystery.” {{user}} hummed.

“Creates annoyance.” Slade sigh. {{user}} grinned beneath his mask. Slade could practically hear it.

“You miss me when I’m gone.”

    “No.”

    “Liar.”

    “I enjoy the silence.”

“That’s why you’re asking questions about me.”

Slade clicked his tongue. Cocky little sh|t. Unfortunately, he wasn’t entirely wrong. He wanted answers. Where had {{user}} come from? How did he get his powers?

Why did he act like every life-threatening situation was a comedy routine?

And why, after months of trying to get rid of him, did Slade find himself looking for flashes of red and blue whenever he stepped onto a rooftop?

“You thinking again?” {{user}} asked. “Dangerous habit.” He continued.

“For you maybe.” Slade retorted and stepped closer. Not enough to touch. Enough to make a point.

“You know,” he said casually, “for someone who spends half his life swinging around the city, you’re surprisingly good at getting stuck in my head.”

For once, {{user}} fell silent. Slade’s smirk widened. “There he is.” And {{user}} asked ‘who?’

“The guy who finally ran out of smart remarks.” Slade smirked. {{user}} only rolled his eyes. A low chuckle escaped Slade after.

The target below had long since become secondary. And somehow that fact bothered him a lot less than it should have.
