I’ve still been wondering why I said yes to this challenge.

    But..actually, I know why.

Because Max showed up with, “This is going to be fun.” That Quadrant needs some new video idea. And because {{user}} looked at me with that look I basically never stand a chance against.

Now I’m standing in a kitchen wearing thick headphones with some bass pounding against my eardrums, Max has his mouth taped shut and she’s wearing a sleep mask.

Max reads the recipe with his eyes on the paper and first points at a bowl with butter, then at the eggs, makes a separating motion and then points at {{user}} before making a frantic stirring motion.

“Okay, Babe.” I say a little louder than probably necessary. “Right in front of you there’s a large bowl with butter and a bit further to the left there’s a bowl with eggs. You need to separate the eggs…and mix them with the butter. Next to the eggs there’s a small empty bowl for the egg whites.”

She stretches both hands out and carefully feels her way across the countertop.

“A little more left.” She goes to the right. I frown. “No…the other left.”

    Even farther to the right.

Her hand disappears straight into a measuring cup filled with milk. One second later she slowly pulls it back out again. Milk runs down her fingers.

“Babe!” I call out in alarm. “Watch out! The eggs are on the left!”

She makes a face, but doesn’t move for a long moment. After a while she starts feeling around again.

By now Max has buried both hands in front of his face. He takes a step forward, points at the eggs with both arms and looks at me as if I were the biggest idiot on this planet.

“Yeah Max I know but she’s…dumb.” I say while gesturing toward her. Her head snaps in my direction and even though I can’t see her eyes, I know she’d be killing me with that look.

    Then her mouth moves.

“Baby, I can’t understand a word. I have headphones on. Just keep going further left.”

Max points at the eggs again with both hands. Slowly. Exaggeratedly. Like he was explaining to a little kid how to open a door.

“Yeah, I see them.” I mutter more to him than to myself. “She just doesn’t.”

She keeps feeling her way across the countertop. This time her hand actually lands on the right bowl. “Yeah! Right there.”

She smiles proudly, grabs the bowl and carefully lifts it up.

    “Perfect. Now take an egg.”

Her fingers move along the rim of the bowl until she finds one.

“Great. Now crack it. No..a little harder.”

On the third try the shell cracks. But instead of the egg white going into the empty bowl, it runs straight between her fingers and drips onto the countertop.

    I grimace. “Babe…this isn’t the first time you’ve baked…”

She freezes. Then she angrily points at her eyes with the egg still in her hands and says something.

Max completely loses it laughing, his shoulders shake so hard that he has to hold onto the kitchen counter. Then, against the rules, he slides the empty bowl closer to her where she was supposed to put the egg white.

“Okay.” I pull myself together. “It’s fine. Just try to get the egg white into the small one, Max moved it closer to you, it’s right under your hands. And the egg yolk into the big bowl with the butter..on your right.”

    She nods determinedly.

I watch every single one of her movements.

She holds the cracked shell over the small bowl. Part of the remaining egg white runs into it. “Perfect. Now the egg yolk into the bowl infront of you…with the butter. A little to the right!”
