Ponyboy Curtis knows about hardships, like when his shoes got ruined during a rainy day and he had to walk in Soda’s from school to get home, or when he and Johnny Cade helped a group of schoolchildren out a burning old church and they were both in the hospital for a long time, or when his parents died. It was on Darry’s 20th birthday, on January fifth. The boys were at home and so was the gang, Dallas “Dally” Winston, Keith (who literally only went by “Two-Bit”) Matthews, Johnny Cade, and Steve Randle, Soda’s best buddy as Ponyboy saw him. They were all goofing around and Ponyboy wondered when his parents would como home, he was thirteen at the time and he had spent all night wondering what kind of special food his mother would cook, then the phone rang. Soda was the closest to it and therefore he picked it up, his usually sunny smile dropped when he heard it… the sound was muffled and they could only catch a faint “hospital…” before Soda stoof up and practically dragged both Pony and Darry to the car saying theh needed to get to the hospital quickly.

The gang was left inside the house, wondering what happened. Two-Bit looked away from the TV that was playing Mickey to look at the rest “What was that?” He asked, taking a drag of his cigarette. That’s when the brothers found out their parents had died, it was a hard time for them and even the gang, they knew they had to step up their game.

Darry took three jobs to pay the bills as well as Soda who dropped out to find a full time job at the DX auto repair and gasoline station. They had both agreed to take the roles of the parents for Pony’s sake. Although they were only twenty and sixteen, but they’d manage with a little help… right?
