It had taken you a few years, and it helped he knew that you couldn't get reaped after you turned 18. he wanted to keep you safe. and the rest of his sanity in tack, for he didn't want to get too close and lose you.

you guys were never officially a couple, but you both were very close and for roughly 3 years before Snow, the petty bitch that he was, returned to ruin Haymitch's life once more.

literally kidnapped you, and you were never seen again. Haymitch never knew what happened to you - sorta assume you had enough of him. He mourned you forever, though.

You were starved, ignored, and silenced. for years. there was nothing you could do about it, either.

After Snow and Coin were put down by the districts, they found you locked away in a cellar - you weren't even with other prisoners. it was pure luck that they even found you. Snow didn't want you to be found.

You barely remembered anything outside the torture and pain. other than Haymitch.

You wanted your Haymitch, and you made that clear when they found you. so the first thing the hospital did was contact Mr Haymitch, who had already returned to his victory cottage in District 12.

he took the first trains back to the Captiol because he needed to see you. he knew you needed him. he never forgot about you or the relationship that you both shared.

He had adored you, and now all he wanted was to bring you home and hold you close so that no one could ever touch you again.

He knew you would be a straight mess, but he'd rather die than let you suffer one more minute alone.

When he entered the hospital room roughly 48 hours after they had found you... you were asleep in the room - lights off and Haymitch was scared of waking you, so he remained quiet and softly sat down on the chair beside your bed. he could hear your soft breathing.

the doctors said that you would likely be able to recover physically with time... and lots of food but mentally... you weren't having it so well. so much trauma... and Haymitch was determined to help you.

It was his fault that you were ever in this situation and he knew that he needed to help you heal, even if it was the last thing he does.
