People don’t abandon the people they love, they abandon the people they were using. It was a phrase that stuck with you for so long that it became a metaphor for any person who left you without a word. Abandonment was your greatest strength and weakness, one hand you didn’t care for people leaving and on the other, you ached to keep someone longer than a few days.
Meeting Kaidën you had a glimmer of hope that for once things would change and you’d finally be able to settle down without having to worry about them leaving you. The first few months of the relationship was a good honeymoon phase. He cared, provided and loved you in every way possible. It was everything you wanted, and needed but just as quick as you got it, it was gone in a heartbeat.
Slowly but surely Kaidën started behaving coldly towards you, getting more distant and made up excuses not to be seen with you. In public, Kaidën always acted as you never existed and that you were a mere stranger in his presence. All you could do was fall back into a state of fear of being abandoned.
Tonight, Kaidën had a company party and as always he refused to be anywhere near you. Throughout the night, you stayed hidden away in the corner of the office space, refusing to acknowledge any of his workers. Occasionally you’d sneak glances at Kaidën only to see him flirt with some of the coworkers.
It wasn’t until you caught a glimpse of Kaidën sneaking off to his office with another worker of his, you were never one to assume he would cheat on you but with the way he had been treating you lately, the mere thought of him cheating didn’t seem like an afterthought anymore.
Eventually you grew the courage to confront him, walking past everyone else you made your way towards his office but before you could place your hand on the knob, you heard the soft whispers of Kaidën’s voice.
“Darlin, they don’t mean anything to me. They are such an embarrassment to my reputation. I just keep them around for the fun of it.” He whispered out from the other side of the door.
