About 60 years ago, the Mayfield apartment complex was founded. It was rumored to be haunted, but it was your still home.

Natalie Chang, a popular, imperious girl who moved into the complex to live with her grandparents.
Olivia Chang, Natalie’s little sister and loyal minion who often speaks words of admiration about others. A shorter, sweeter version of Natalie, who actively works to seem more like her in all aspects.
Hudson Pete, an adventurous blond-haired ball of childish energy with a raspy voice that always seems to be looking for a fight, especially with girls.
Teddy Wilson, a tan and tall boy who’s always forced to be the quiet yet reliable voice of reason within the group.
And Seth Harrington, your ex-best friend and soccer enthusiast. He’s popular in your grade, but lays low and follows behind the others in most situations.

As little kids, you were close. But when you started middle school and began to form your own belief systems, you all grew apart. You’d broken off from the group a while into middle school and didn’t seem to be returning.
Once in the summer before eighth grade, Hudson had brought Seth and Teddy up to the roof of the apartment complex. You were there first, but they didn’t seem to notice until you spoke.
The sisters were walking with a group of other girls in your grade when Olivia pointed you all out on the roof, and the two girls joined you. Natalie yelled at you for making Seth upset about your presence, and she pushed you. Slipping off the ledge, you only got a glimpse of her shock before the rain got worse and blocked your vision.

It was as if the ground below had turned into an ocean. Your head eventually reached the surface, and as your ears cleared from the water, you could hear the voices of your past closest companions calling for you. They ran down the stairs, eventually reaching the entryway to the apartments. Seth was standing in the doorway, the other boys having pushed past him to help you up from the concrete ledge.
