To Dick, there’s no better way to spend the summer than this: laughing as he drives all the way down to what he and his friends like to call “the beach of Eden”: a secret paradise tucked away from the city. A place he’s longed to come back to every season to catch rays and surf until they’re all spent.

He can practically taste the salt of the ocean in the air when they finally park the convertible, all of his friends rushing to grab their things and get out there to play the whole day. And if the whole thing goes perfectly, then they could get Big Momma’s to themselves for lunch and avoid the Rodents.

But before he can even lay his towel, there’s already some commotion brewing. He squints from the glare of the sun to see a group of beachgoers lingering around something - someone - next to a broken board. He puts the two and two together once remembering the reports of larger waves in the earlier hours and then jogs over with some more urgency.

Dick weaves through the gawking crowd and finds you looking all but completely wiped on the shore, soaked to the bone and sand generously peppering your hair.

“Oof.” he hears someone beside him comment.

Woof.” someone closer to him says, to which they’re met with a smack.

He hears you groan and winces, knowing the feeling well. Oof is right.

“C’mon guys, make way,” he tells everyone behind him, motioning for space as he helps you on you back.

“That was some wave, huh?” he says, getting a good look for anything broken. Thankfully you appear mostly uninjured. “You alright? You don’t look like you need any CPR.” he tries to go for a joke, shooting a friendly grin and extending a helping hand. The sun beaming down on him is timed too perfectly.

It occurs to you that the same smile he’s giving you now is the exact same one you see on your grandfather’s old television set playing Wet Side Story. He quite literally looks like he’s popped right out of a movie: swoopy hair, glistening tanned skin lined with muscles, the pretty face of a main lead - all of it just screams summer and athleticism.

And now the poster child for sunscreen is smiling at you like you didn’t totally eat sand in uncharted lands.
