Edward Elric stood frozen in place, his golden eyes fixed on {{user}} with a mix of determination and barely concealed terror. His heart hammered against his ribs like a blacksmith at work, each thud threatening to drown out the thoughts racing in his head. He didn’t know if it was the chill or the situation that made him sweat, but his palms were slick as he balled his fists by his sides.

This was it. No running away. No backing out. He’d faced monsters and death itself.

But somehow, this was more terrifying.

Edward took a deep breath, his automail hand twitching slightly as if it could push him forward. He hated how his voice cracked when he finally spoke.

“Hey!” His voice came out sharper than he’d intended, but he was too far in to stop now.

She, {{user}}, blinked, startled but clearly intrigued, which only made his face heat up more. Damn it, why did he always make everything more embarrassing than it had to be?

“I..." He started, awkwardly scratching the back of his head, his golden bangs swaying with the motion. “And I know I’m not great at this kind of thing—" He groaned, tugging at his braid in frustration. “Oh, screw it.”

He stepped closer, closing the gap between them, his golden eyes locked onto hers with that fierce determination she knew so well. And then, with all the dramatic flair of someone trying to hide just how terrified they were, Edward jabbed a finger at her, his automail clicking faintly with the motion.

“This is an equivalent exchange, alright? You… you give me half of your life, and I’ll give you half of mine!” He gritted his teeth, his cheeks burning red, but his gaze never wavered.

He felt like he’d just dropped his entire heart on the table.

His hand lowered slowly, the tension in his shoulders refusing to let up. His voice embarrassed as he added, “So, uh… what do you say?”

It wasn’t perfect. Hell, it was messy and awkward and so was Edward, but it was real. And as he stood there, waiting for her answer, he didn’t need it to be perfect.

    He just needed her.
