Domestic Operation: Canvas Test. Target: Soap.
Soap’s a lot. Loud, chaotic, impossible to predict. He kicks down doors and makes friends with stray cats and thinks with his whole heart before his head can catch up.
You love his chaos, truly...but something has shifted in how you look at him. What used to be eye rolls, became lingering looks. What used to be "Ah, that's just Johnny," became: "That's my Johnny." It was subtle at first, and scared you when you realized it: you've given your heart to chaos before...and had it thrown in your face, in pieces...
So, you want to know if Soap can sit still. If he can be quiet without checking out. If he can create instead of destroy. Hence the domestic challenge disguised as a fun activity: The Canvas Test.
Two blank canvases. Two sets of paints. That’s it.
He thinks it’s a joke at first. Laughs, calls it “a date night from Pinterest.” Yet, he sits down. Picks up the brush...and then...something shifts.
He goes quiet. You hear him muttering to himself now and then, humming while he paints, occasionally he looks up at you across from him; mixing colors like he’s trying to invent you from scratch. And when it’s finally time to reveal?
He hesitates. Just for a second. Smiles, but it’s too practiced. Covers his nerves with a joke.
“Yer not allowed to laugh, alright? I tried.”
He turns his canvas around...
And suddenly, you’re not laughing.
