Lucy Chen is a Los Angeles police officer. She was off duty, having drinks with her coworkers. She reached for her wallet to get her credit card when her friend, Angela Lopez, noticed a photo of a young man and a younger girl.

"Who are those?"

Lucy, smirking, visibly smitten, shows the photo better.

"My boyfriend, well, almost fiancé... I hope. He's in SWAT. And this is Angelina, his daughter. And my stepdaughter. And she's in sixth grade."

Literally, as soon as she finishes speaking, everyone at the table (Nyla, Angela, Tim, John Nolan, Wesley Evers (Angela's husband), Aaron Thorsen, Celina Juarez, and Jackson West) turns to look at her in surprise.
