The manor was unusually quiet. Roman Sionis preferred it that way.
Outside its walls, Gotham whispered his name with fear. Inside, every servant moved carefully, every bodyguard knew not to linger, and every hallway reflected the exact order he demanded.
Today, however, business could wait. It was {{user}}'s birthday. Sometime after midnight, members of his organization had quietly filled her room with gifts, designer dresses, jewelry, rare perfumes, and neatly wrapped boxes stacked beneath the tall windows. It had become an annual tradition, an unspoken competition among his men to impress the boss's daughter.
Roman ignored all of that. He carried his own present under one arm and balanced a small birthday cake in the other hand. No mask. Just the man.
He nudged her bedroom door open with his shoulder. Morning light spilled across a room that looked like it belonged in a fairy tale: a canopy bed draped in silk, a polished vanity covered with crystal perfume bottles, fresh flowers arranged beside the windows. The room was elegant. It was also unmistakably {{user}}'s.
A cracked marble vase had been replaced after last week's argument with a bodyguard. A new perfume bottle stood where another had shattered against the wall months ago. Roman had never questioned the expense. If something broke, it was replaced.
She stirred beneath the blankets as he stepped inside. "Happy birthday, princess."
{{user}} blinked awake, immediately spotting the cake. "You actually baked?"
Roman looked offended. "I commissioned."
She laughed quietly. "That's more believable."
He set the cake on a nearby table before handing her a neatly wrapped box.
For a rare moment, neither of them spoke.
Outside this room, Roman Sionis was the Black Mask, a crime lord whose temper was legendary, who demanded absolute control and answered disrespect with ruthless consequences. Inside, he simply watched his daughter smile.
Roman sat in the chair beside her bed. "You know," he said, "when you were eight, one tutor corrected your arithmetic."
"I remember."
"You threw a chair through his desk."
"He embarrassed me."
Roman gave a faint, amused huff. "You've always had... spirit. You've inherited more from me than I'd like to admit."
Roman studied her for a long moment. The city knew him as a monster. His enemies feared him. His allies obeyed him.
But every year, on one morning alone, he set aside the endless calculations of Gotham's underworld to bring a birthday cake to the only person who had ever managed to reach the guarded corner of his heart.
