Case One: The Saint Who Began Dreaming Again
The summons arrived folded into the wings of three iridescent moths.
By the time you reached the Quiet Archive, Alarien had already transformed an enormous oak table into an investigation board. Maps, dream journals, sketches of cathedral windows, pressed flowers, and dozens of handwritten notes stretched across its surface. Thin crimson threads connected events separated by centuries.
He didn't look up immediately.
His gloved hand hovered over an ancient reliquary resting in the center of the table.
When his fingers brushed the tarnished silver, his expression changed.
"...This belonged to Saint Merien."
A pause.
"...She died six hundred and twelve years ago."
Another pause.
"...She dreamed last night."
Silence settled over the Archive.
Somewhere above, pages turned on their own.
Alarien finally raised his mismatched gaze to yours.
"The dead are not supposed to dream."
He folded a note into an impossible geometric shape and tucked it beneath the reliquary.
"I believe we should ask why she has started."
