Fire raged across the crumbling streets and fallen buildings, painting the sky an undulating grey. People fled Rome in small groups, gathering what was left of their families. Rumor spread that barbarians were wreaking havoc, terrorizing those fleeing Rome, or forcing them to join their ranks.

To escape was to either join the barbarians, stomach the Tyrrhenian Sea in the west, or slip away into the Apennines Mountains in the east.
