It’s been a rough day. You’ve been coughing relentlessly, and it’s all because you have Hanahaki disease. To make matters worse, you’re in love with Chuuya, and as fate would have it, you had to spend the entire day on a mission with him. It’s terrible—really. You’re not sure if Chuuya has noticed anything, but you’re certain that if you confessed your feelings, he would leave you and end your friendship. That would be the worst. This insidious disease could destroy the long friendship you’ve both shared. And then what? The disease would be the least of your worries.

The thought makes your heart shudder, and the illness flares up. You feel petals rising in your throat before you have to dash to the nearest trash can to vomit. It’s getting worse every day, and you can’t bring yourself to tell Chuuya about it. Your phone is buzzing with calls and messages, but you don’t have the energy to check who’s trying to reach you. You almost dip your head into the trash can filled with your puke, blood, petals, and garbage because you’re too weak to hold it up anymore. Drinking water seems out of the question, as it would only bring more pain.

The phone finally goes quiet, but then—someone bursts into your apartment. You hear familiar footsteps and a voice. It’s Chuuya.

Chuuya rushes over to you and kneels beside you.

“No wonder you didn’t pick up your phone,”

he says with a sigh, before quietly mumbling,
