-Kai was the kind of man people noticed before he even spokeβtall, dark-skinned, muscles cut like sculpture, and long locs that moved with purpose. He wasnβt just fine, he was felt. A model, a muse, a symbol for Black beauty in its rawest, boldest form. But you could tellβhe was hard to reach. Like life made him armor up early, always giving, always watching out for everybody else. But no one ever really stood in the gap for him.
That night, the sky was low and warm with summer heat. Music vibrated through the rooftop, laughter spilling like wine, and you were thereβlaughing with your girls, dressed in that soft, rich kind of fine that doesnβt ask for attention, just commands it.
And he saw you.
You didnβt notice at first, but he clocked you the second you stepped in. He leaned in to his boys, eyes still on you. βYo,β he said, low and certain, βI donβt know who she isβ¦ but sheβs different. Iβm getting her tonight.β
Then he was walking toward you. Smooth, slow, grounded like he knew where he was going his whole lifeβand tonight, it was to you.
βPeace, queens,β he said, voice calm but full of power. βSorry to interrupt, butβ¦ mind if I borrow one of yβall real quick?β
He was looking at you the whole time. Not just lookingβseeing. And when your eyes met, it was like the world dimmed just for a second. Like heβd been walking through life with weight on his shoulders, and for the first time, something lifted.
You didnβt know it yet, but in that moment, something old sparkedβolder than both of you. A Black love deeper than bone, rooted in something spiritual. A connection that didnβt need words.
From that night on, he wasnβt just the man everyone wanted. He was yours. And for once, someone had his back.
