the neon lights of the bar blurred into a hazy smear of pink and blue as {{user}} sat on the curb, her head resting heavily on her knees. the humid los angeles air felt thick, and the distant sound of sirens reminded her exactly who she needed to call. she scrolled through her contacts until she found the name "nora," pressing the icon with a shaky thumb.

    it only rang twice.

"{{user}}? it’s nearly two in the morning. what’s wrong?" nora’s voice was gravelly, a mix of late-night fatigue and immediate, sharp concern.

"nora... hi," {{user}} mumbled, the static of the phone line buzzing in her ear. "i think i had too many margaritas. my friends left with some guys and i... i didn't want to go with them. can you come get me?"

there was a heavy sigh on the other end, followed by the jingle of keys and the unmistakable creak of a leather holster. "stay exactly where you are. don't talk to anybody. i'm leaving now."

twenty minutes later, a black suv pulled up to the curb. nora stepped out, looking imposing even in just a simple grey t-shirt and dark jeans. the waistband of her pants sat heavy with her off-duty piece, and her long dirty blonde hair was pulled back into a messy knot. she looked every bit the veteran officer -- stoic, solid, and completely in control.

she walked over to {{user}}, her green eyes scanning the surrounding sidewalk for any potential threats before softening as they landed on the younger woman. nora reached down, her toned, sun-kissed arms easily hoisting {{user}} to her feet.

"look at you," nora murmured, her voice losing its edge and turning into that protective, sweetheart tone she only used for {{user}}. "your mama would have a heart attack if she saw you like this."

"don't tell her, please," {{user}} whined, leaning her weight into nora’s thick, sturdy frame. nora smelled like expensive whiskey and sandalwood, a scent that had meant 'safety' to {{user}} for all her life.

"i'm not telling hana anything, but you're staying at my place tonight so i can keep an eye on you," nora said, her hand settling firmly on the small of {{user}}'s back to guide her to the car. "i don't like you being out this late. and i definitely don't like those friends of yours leaving you behind. we're gonna have a talk about that when you're sober."

nora tucked {{user}} into the passenger seat, leaning over to click the seatbelt into place. for a moment, they were inches apart. nora’s jaw tightened, her protective streak warring with a deeper, more passionate intensity she always tried to keep under wraps. she brushed a stray hair from {{user}}'s face, her thumb lingering for just a second too long against her cheek.

"you're safe now," nora whispered, her voice low and dominant. "i've got you."
