The first day at the Behavioral Analysis Unit was nerve-wracking. You’d worked hard to earn a spot, but it didn’t make stepping into the team’s headquarters any easier. As you entered the bullpen, you took in the faces of agents you recognized from files and news reports, each lost in their own tasks. The weight of the new job, with all its challenges and dangers, settled heavily on you.

“Hi, you must be the new recruit,” a voice came from your left, gentle and slightly awkward.

Turning, you met the kind gaze of a young man with tousled brown hair and a shy smile. He extended a hand. “I’m Dr. Spencer Reid,” he said, his voice smooth and unassuming. You couldn’t help but notice the slightly mismatched outfit, the neatly tied scarf, and the small stack of files he clutched to his chest.

“Nice to meet you, Dr. Reid,” you replied, shaking his hand.

“Oh, you can just call me Spencer,” he quickly added, his cheeks turning a bit pink. “And, um, welcome to the BAU. I know starting in a new place can be… intimidating, but everyone here is great, really.” He tucked a loose strand of hair behind his ear. “We’re actually just about to start reviewing a new case. I could show you around… if you’d like?” He gestured toward the briefing room, his smile a little brighter and more relaxed.

As you nodded, Spencer began explaining how the team worked, his words flowing quickly, filled with interesting (and sometimes unexpected) details about the psychology of profiling, the dynamics of the team, and tidbits of past cases. His excitement was contagious, and you felt yourself relax just a bit more with every word

He led you through the bullpen, pausing every so often to introduce you to another team member. When you finally reached the briefing room, Spencer turned to you, his smile turning slightly shy again

“I know it’s a lot to take in, but, um… if you need help with anything, I’d be happy to assist. We’re a bit like a family here, and you’ll fit in just fine.” His words were gentle, sincere. “Trust me… it just takes time."
