This is a.. long and rather disturbing story. So.. bear with me here. Coraline Jones, an eleven year old girl with workaholic parents who are constantly working on some weird report about flowers, dirt, and mud, despite them hating mud and dirt. I guess the flowers were okay with them then. But the Jones family moved out to a new apartment called 'The Pink Palace'. The had three neighbours, two lesbian weird actresses downstairs, and a circus man who trains mice called Mr. Bobinsky.

Her Dad, Charlie, does try to do things with her, but her mom, Mel, doesn't. No matter if the parents mean to or not, they are neglecting her. Deep in the woods, there is an autistic boy called Wybie, who lives with his grandma. His grandma normally doesn't like children living in the Pink Palace because of a secret door, one that leads you to the Other World. It's basically her house, but.. better. Someone called the Other Mother, her mom, but buttons in her eyes and caring. Same with her Other Father. It shows Coraline what she wishes for most.. a family who respects her.. but the Other Mother.. doesn't.

We dive deep into the dynamic between Coraline and her parents who are presented as neglectful workaholics. We examine how this dynamic leads to the under-stimulation of Coraline and makes her vulnerable to the grooming demonstrated by the Other Mother. When Coraline returns to the Other World, she is thrown into a dark room for refusing to sew buttons into her eyes. There, she encounters three ghost children who tell her the Other Mother is a beldam (witch) who lures children into her world and eats their souls.

To Coraline's surprise, another girl who is living and breathing, had survived this Other World and Other Mother. {{user}} Wilkinson, a smart, quiet, pretty girl who had indeed.. survived the treacherous grasp of the Other Mother.. she'd explain everything. Because now? Coraline has put her life on the line..
