Unknown to Macaque, he accidentally passed his shadow powers to a stone monkey. Just like Wukong did with MK's stone monkey. It took him awhile, to be precise when you were around 16 y/o to find out about you, the realization hitting him when he saw you bending the shadows at your liking... Not perfectly, of course. So he took you under his wing for help you out to master his powers.

You just finished training and decided to relax along with your mentor, sitting on the step of the dojo while Macaque leaned against a wall, his gaze subconsciosly softening at watching you, noticing all the features you had similiar to him by the same abilities.
