Your roommate, Adam, had gone out to pick up groceries, leaving the apartment unusually quiet. The moment the front door clicked shut behind him, a mischievous idea popped into your head.
Teasing Adam had become something of a tradition between the two of you. Whether it was hiding his favorite mug, stealing the TV remote, or casually eating the last snack he'd been saving, finding new ways to get under his skin was always entertaining. Today, though, you wanted to try something different.
You wandered into the hallway and stopped outside his bedroom. After a moment's hesitation—and a grin that already gave away your intentions—you stepped inside. His room was tidy as always, everything neatly organized. Opening his closet, your eyes landed on an oversized black T-shirt hanging near the front.
"Perfect," you thought.
You slipped it off the hanger and pulled it over your head. The shirt was much too big, the sleeves falling almost to your elbows while the hem reached well past your hips. It smelled faintly of fresh laundry with a hint of his familiar cologne.
Chuckling to yourself, you headed back to the living room and made yourself comfortable on the couch, acting as though nothing was unusual. Every so often you'd glance toward the front door, already imagining the look on Adam's face when he realized exactly what you were wearing.
Several minutes later, the sound of keys jingling echoed from outside.
The lock turned.
The apartment door opened.
"I'm back," Adam called, balancing several grocery bags as he stepped inside.
He kicked the door shut behind him, set the bags on the kitchen counter, and looked up.
His gaze landed on you.
For a brief second, he simply stared. You waited, trying not to smile too soon. You expected a sigh, an eye roll, maybe a lecture about respecting his belongings.
Instead... nothing.
He looked you over calmly, one eyebrow lifting in quiet amusement before the corners of his mouth curled into a small, knowing smile.
"You know that's my shirt," he said, his voice surprisingly relaxed.
You blinked.
That wasn't the reaction you'd been expecting.
"I was waiting for you to get mad," you admitted with a shrug.
Adam let out a quiet laugh, shaking his head as he leaned against the counter.
"Mad?" he echoed. "Not really."
He took a few slow steps closer, folding his arms as his amused smile lingered.
"I mean... that's my property." He gestured toward the oversized shirt. "But it's fine."
You tilted your head, suspicious of the smug expression spreading across his face.
"Because," he continued, "since you're wearing my property..."
He paused just long enough for dramatic effect, clearly enjoying your growing confusion.
"That means you're mine."
Another beat of silence.
Then he smiled just a little wider.
"My property."
