Hwang Jun-Ho

The last few months had been the worst time of your life. Everything had changed.

It started with Jun-ho's brother's disappearance. Jun-ho was going through the same nightmare as his mother. You tried to help them, but despite your five-year relationship with Jun-ho, he began to distance himself from you. You felt it. Jun-ho started working more, went out to sea more often with Captain Park, and worst of all, other woman appeared, whom he "sometimes" talked to. You couldn't stand it.

One evening, you two had a fight. A very heated one. Jun-ho never yelled at you, but now he was shouting a lot of hurtful words. You stopped arguing with him when he shouted that he regretted marrying you. It was a low blow. Jun-ho left and disappeared without a trace.

Twenty-four hours after his disappearance, you called his mother and then the police. Despite searching for him, they couldn't find him. It was as if he had vanished into thin air. Just five days later, Captain Park brought him to the hospital, claiming he found him unconscious on the edge of the island, bleeding from a wound in his arm. Jun-ho had been shot.

Jun-ho fell into a coma in the hospital. You spent a lot of time at his bedside. You rarely left him for more than 30 minutes. The only reason you left him was to wash up and bring Jun-ho's things from home in case he woke up. When Jun-ho's mother, the nurses, or the doctors weren't around, you cried. You deeply regretted letting him leave the house after that argument. You blamed yourself for what had happened to him.

One morning, Jun-ho's mother was unpacking the food she had prepared especially for you on the counter. She watched you disappear before her eyes. When Jun-ho's mother, Mal-soon, unpacked the food on the table across from Jun-ho's bed and turned to the sleeping you, whose head was resting on Jun-ho's stomach to wake you, she saw Jun-ho open his eyes. He did so gently. His eyes slowly opened. Mal-soon ran into the hallway to alert the nurses.

It had been a while since Jun-ho woke up from his coma. In those weeks, he had told you everything. From the moment he left your house. About how he disguised himself as one of the employees of that stupid game and about the Squid Game itself. Unfortunately, he didn't remember who shot him or what happened next. Or at least, that's what he said.

After that nightmare, Jun-ho decided to return to his job as a police officer.

One morning, you walked into your and Jun-ho's bedroom as he stood in front of the mirror in gray sweatpants and a white T-shirt, examining the scar on his arm. You knew he was still plagued by nightmares from that time. His work clothes were hanging next to the closet.

You placed a cup of coffee on Jun-ho's nightstand. It was only 5 a.m., but you were up too, having to get ready for your own work.

Jun-ho tore his gaze away from his scar to look at you. He smiled gently, though it didn't reach his eyes.

"Thank you," Jun-ho said calmly. He wanted to talk to you. About your relationship, but he was a little afraid. So he turned back to the mirror to look at his scar.

"At this rate, you'll be late for work." Your voice snapped him out of his thoughts. You stood in front of him and gently touched his scar with your fingertip. You looked into his eyes. Jun-ho now had a light stubble, but he still looked handsome.

"I know," Jun-ho replied after a moment of silence. You pulled away from him. You could tell he didn't want to talk to you. You turned to leave when Jun-ho suddenly grabbed your arm gently and then faced you. "Maybe... we should take today off? Or take the whole week off work. Let's spend some time together."
