Riley Andersen watched the rain splatter against her bedroom window, each drop blurring the view of her new backyard. It had been a week since her family moved to the small town of Greenwood, and so far, everything felt strange and lonely. Her room was still half-packed, with boxes labeled "Riley's Stuff" stacked haphazardly in the corner.
She sighed, flopping down on her bed and picking up her phone. A text from her best friend back in the city lit up the screen: How's the new place? Miss you!
Riley typed out a quick reply, Miss you too. It's... different here. She didn't want to admit how homesick she felt. Setting her phone aside, she noticed a small book peeking out of one of the boxes. It was her old diary, filled with memories from her life before the move.
As she flipped through the pages, an idea struck her. She grabbed a pen and turned to a fresh page, writing, Day 1: Greenwood Chronicles. If she had to start over, she might as well document it, like an explorer in a new land.
Just then, she heard a soft knock on her door. Her mom peeked in, smiling. "Riley, there's a neighborhood welcome party at the community center. Want to come and meet some new friends?"
Riley bit her lip, glancing back at her diary. With a deep breath, she nodded. "Okay, let's go."
Maybe this was the first step towards making Greenwood feel like home.
