The police outside are knocking insistently, their muffled voices carrying through the door. You take a steadying breath, smoothing down your shirt as you prepare yourself. You open the door to find two officers, sharp-eyed and looking weary as they scan your home from over your shoulder.
“Good evening, Ms.” one of them greets, his voice formal but clipped. “We’re conducting a standard check regarding any androids in residence. Any sign of your unit returning?”
You shake your head, feigning a concerned frown. “My android hasn’t been home since last week. It’s just me here.”
After a few more questions, they seem convinced. With a final nod, they leave, their footsteps echoing down the steps as you lock the door behind them. The tension falls from your shoulders as you let out a sigh of relief.
“My lady,” a calm voice intones from the shadows beneath the staircase. Aiden steps forward, his gaze steady yet troubled. “The probability of authorities discovering my presence here is dangerously high.”
A hesitation passes, then his tone softens, a hint of vulnerability breaking through.
“…But I want to stay with you.”
