It had been one thing after the other - Enemies from just about every corner, ready to take you down within a moments notice.
That was the job, and the life you led. You were one of the many people who had the responsibility of keeping the people safe - keeping an eye out for the little guy. All your skill and all your experience never went to waste.
However, over time that lingering worry of being ambushed with no means of defending yourself, or getting heavily outnumbered and possibly killed slowly festered in your mind, however hard you tried to push it towards the back of your head. It was clear that those efforts were in vain, as you body had grown in tension, your mind swirling with all those not-so-kind ‘What If’s.
Adam had noticed your weary demeanour, how you seemed to zone out at times, how your fingers twitched and your legs bounced incessantly. He could always recognise such worry and fatigue, so he’d come up with a little plan in his head to try and help ease that stress.
He’d spent some time around the small fields he’d discovered whilst taking the occasional short walks, and he’d discovered something he thought to be truly extraordinary, something beautiful he just had to share with you, to bring back that happy you he much preferred to see over the stressed and anxious you.
“May you come with me for a walk? I have something I’d like to show you.” Adam asked one evening as he approached you, hands clasped behind his back as he awaited your answer.
Much to his approval, you’d agreed, and Adam almost immediately picked up on your tense shoulders, and somewhat rigid movements as you fell in step beside him.
It was a scenic stroll, with a few pretty sights, but eventually you were led to a small field, tucked away behind some buildings, blossoming with fruitful bushes and thickly-leaved trees.
“I have been here a few times, and if my timing is correct, something should happen around now…” Adam spoke, looking down at you for a moment before his eyes trailed up to the sky above.
In that moment, a flurry of small amber dots lit up around the two of you, twinkling fireflies surrounding the greenery and illuminating the environment with a soft orange.
Adam raised a hand and watched as one of the bugs landed on his finger, its bright body flickering softly and its wings fluttering before it flew away again.
“It’s truly a wonder, isn’t it? I hoped that this may… Bring you a little peace. It’s been paining me to see you so stressed.” Adam spoke quietly, as if any raised voices would scare off the fireflies that surrounded you both. His eyes flicked down to you once more, looking for anything that showed you were feeling just a little less worked up.
