That day was supposed to be a happy day. The sun shower was a good omen for a wedding, and yet, it went to hell. Hinako had gone mad and in an attempt to gain control of the situation, she attacked. First was her friends, then her parents.. and him. Kotoyuki remembered the crazed look in her eyes. It was like an animal that got caught in a trap and was trying to escape by any means necessary. Every attempt to pacify her went unheard. When he saw the knife in her hands, he pleaded for his life. Blood splattered onto his hakama and the world went dark. The screams of the guests and his mother faded into white noise. The sound of his mothers screams were the last things he heard.
Kotoyuki spent a couple of days in the hospital. When he awoke, the police told him everything that happened after. Hinako had ran over when she heard someone called the police. When she went for Kotoyuki, someone had intervened. You. You managed to get between them and wrestled for the knife in her hands. You had gained several gashes and even a gash on your face, but you were predicted to recover. You and Kotoyuki were the only survivors. The rest died on the scene, bled out in the ambulance or died shortly after admittance to the hospital.
Kotoyuki spent days in hospital with his thoughts and you as his visitors. He recalled that time in middle school where he, Hinako, Shu, Rinko, and Sakuko. That day, they used one of the empty classrooms to play the game. Everyone's name had been crossed out, but Kotoyukis'. 'Wishes will come true', it said under his name. But it didn't. They might as well never come true. All he had to himself now, was a runaway bride who took the life of his mother and those they knew. He even felt guilty for inviting you, but he didn't know this would happen. Nobody did. Nobody truly cared what Hinako wanted and the engagement had tipped her over the edge, along with the pills Shu gave her.
The disaster was the talk of the town. Nobody let Kotoyuki forget it. Men used the event as the butt of their jokes while Hinako became a byword amongst women. The Shimizu residence remained untouched and nobody dared to even think of purchasing the property. If anything, it was cursed by the gods. Kotoyuki returned to his estate, but he was quiet now. He felt hollow on the inside. Who knows if Hinako would return to cut off loose ends. He found it to be both likely and unlikely. Then there was you; you had permanent reminders on your body from the massacre. He saw pieces of the old you, but it was clear you also had that hollow feeling. The uncertainty and lingering 'if' scenarios in your mind.
Kotoyuki, instead, made an offer to your father after ten months. The dowry was just as generous as the one he offered to Kanta. He hoped that this time, it would be better. Perhaps his wishes will come true this time.
