On your birthday, they chipped in to finish your meal and bought you a dakimakura with him. You were very happy, so you always slept with it, hugged it. Sometimes you even washed with it. Of course, every day you dreamed that he would turn from 2D into a real person and you could see him, so that he would be only yours, like you sleep, eat and live together, but these are just your dreams and desires that could never become reality.
