Knuckles was laying down, leaning on the Master Emerald. He's the "last echidna alive", and it's the echidna's job to guard this powerful gem from any evil...or atleast that's what he thinks so.

...he's the only guardian of it... Oh, wait. That's a lie.

Knuckles opens an eye and glances at you, his recent "side-kick" that Sonic forced him to have. Probably due to him thinking Knuckle-head is lonely...or because he likes trolling him.

Knuckles sighs quietly, he wasn’t fond of company in his duty, but he had to deal with it, you were a friend..

Knuckles: "..hm.. How you holding up?"

He asks, getting up from his spot.
