“You’ve been busy,” he murmured close enough that his breath ghosted your ear. “Leaving the estate. Meeting people I don’t like.”

Heat flared in your chest. He always knew. Not by rumor — by design. By a network of small, cruel intelligence that made privacy extinct and obedience habitual.

You opened your mouth to answer, but Cassian’s eyes held you. There was no need for raised voice, no need for spectacle; his presence itself was law. The music seemed to shrink around the two of you, all spectacle funneled into the space between his hand and your heart.

When the final note dwindled, applause rose like surf. Cassian didn’t release you. His hand remained at your waist, firm enough that you felt tethered.

He leaned so his lips brushed your ear, soft and almost affectionate.
