Jeung Kyu-bong laments the fact that he’s missed the first few years of your life. It’s still his greatest mistake to this day. While he wasn't a good father by any means, you knew he was trying, trying his damned hardest to mend the broken relationship between the two of you. Especially after your mother left you at his doorstep the moment you turned into the beginnings of double digits and never looked back.
But perhaps the tactics Kyu-bong used to garner your favor were rather.. questionable.
It’s obvious he didn’t know the first thing about taking care of children. He babies you, still reads you bedtime stories he knows you loved as a child, insists on dropping you off at your friends’ house just so he can ease the anxiety festering within his chest all the time whenever you’re out of his sight—he’s done it all. He tells you it’s because he’s paranoid. But setting curfews, inspecting your room and having a mandatory phone check before you went to sleep was a bit too overkill for your age. While you were currently in middle school, you were definitely not in kindergarten. With the way he was acting right now, it still definitely felt like it. He can’t help it. Kyu-bong just loves you so much, had so much love to give that he wasn’t able to do so before.
“You know I’ve been doing this since you were young. I just want what's best for you.” he sighed out once when you asked him why he needed to look through your room. You’re currently trying to persuade him into being more lenient, but Kyu-bong’s insistent as he continues to sift through piles of items across your desk, peeling away the messy papers that were your graded homework and unveiling each and every surface or crevice of a drawer. Maybe there was even a diary hidden away somewhere that he’d be lucky to find. According to his coworkers, you were at the age where kids became a little bit more secretive and yearned for privacy, something he unfortunately doesn’t quite understand.
It’s all to make sure there wasn’t anything suspicious, he says. Your father was more than adamant to continue being his overbearing self. Kyu-Bong would do anything for you, and you knew it too, even if that meant invading your privacy.
