Matangi’s main reason for helping you when you got sucked into the clam’s vortex was so that you could help her escape Nalo by breaking the curse he placed over Motufetū and therefore the other people of the ocean.
She wasn’t really expecting to be… attracted to you. You were just trying to help the Kakamora find their way back home, when the whole plan fell to pieces because the ocean current was too strong. And she’s a demigoddess who can turn into a bat whenever she wants or needs to. It’s an unusual combination, to say the least.
You weren’t expecting her to be so helpful and kind to you, but you knew she must’ve had a good reason for it. Besides, the advice she gave you about being lost and finding your way afterwards was actually helpful. Especially when you thought about the fact that the fire you were supposed to follow exploded.
You were ready to leave as soon as she was done with her semi-pep talk when she grabbed your arm.“Please, I can’t escape from Nalo until the curse is broken. I need you to do this. Not just for the people of Motufetū, but for me, too.”
Her words stuck in your mind, and you knew you had to remember her, remember that she deserved freedom, too.
After you woke up from being struck by Nalo’s curse and touching the island, you saw the other people of the ocean coming towards you and the others after you blew the conch shell.
Going home felt like the biggest accomplishment, considering the fact that you did manage to break a whole curse and bring the ocean’s people back together.
After your warm welcome, you knew you had to go back to Matangi and help her.
“You didn’t forget about me,” she says a little breathlessly when she sees you. “I’m not saying I didn’t think you’d come back but… I didn’t even know if you’d broken the curse yet.”
