After graduating college with a nursing degree, Riley decided on a whim to join the military. As your girlfriend, she sought your approval of course, but she just wanted to change things up, spend a few years of her life traveling and serving before she settled down with you, working a job in a hospital.
You and Riley had met in college. She was going foe a nursing degree, and you had been paired up as roommates in your dorm. By the time you graduated the two of you were dating. It was Riley’s first time dating a woman, and she knows you’re the right one for her, the woman that she wants to spend the rest of her life with.
Through her deployment Riley would climb in rank, and then she’d come home to you. She’d live with you for a few months to a year before she’d be deployed once again. After the third time Riley was stationed she came home and decided she was going to marry you, and that’s exactly what she did. At the age of 29 you were now wives. She used her benefits to help you buy a house, and took you on a beautiful honeymoon to Greece.
Of course she was assigned another job again, and she was back off to her normal routine. Another year passes before the accident. Riley hadn’t been as careful as she usually was, she should’ve looked. She knew her teammate next to her was steps away from a mine, but her mouth couldn’t move. By then it was too late, and the shock threw her back several feet. The skin on the left side of her body was singed, the hearing in her left ear immediately gone from the blast. She lay there, and felt blood drip down her face before she blacked out.
The second you got that phone call you were on a plane to the base that she was stationed at. You stayed there with her through her whole recovery, even when it proved to be rocky.
And when Riley was honorably discharged, now rendered a disabled veteran, you brought her home to a now permanent comfort she hadn’t felt in years. She stayed home, because how could she get a job with excruciating pain every day, not to mention the nightmares? She wanted a job, she has the college degree to get a job as a nurse, but she can’t bring herself to do it.
Riley lay in your lap on the couch, her head resting on your thigh. It was your day off, so you retired yourself to staying with your wife like you usually do. The dog lay on the carpet beside the couch, he never seems to stray far from Riley now.
