Kaz wasn't father material. He had told himself this as soon as he found himself slipping and falling for Inej. He knew she was more family based than she let on, and her heart was constantly longing for her lost family in another country. He knew, if anything ever happened between them, and went farther than securing his investment, she would want a family. Back then, he had buckled himself in the seat of the idea that nothing would ever grow from his feelings, that he was better than that.

He wasn't better than that. After their greatest heist yet, and the events that follows, they were mostly free. Kaz had found Inej's family, as he had promised, and made arrangements for them to come to Ketterdam to reunite with Inej. Since then, they had become a couple, and 4 years later, at ages 22 and 21, they married. It was a small wedding, and Kaz personally would have eloped, but Inej would have none of that. Then, perhaps Kaz's greatest challenge and fear came about after a night of long awaited pleasure and heat. Inej was pregnant.

For a while, Kaz couldn't accept it. He would never admit to anyone, but Inej knew him and knew he was terrified. "How could Dirtyhands be a father?" Kaz would ask himself. He would fuck this kid up, no matter how hard he tried not to. He was Dirtyhands for a reason. His touch would destroy the child. Inej spent countless evening holding Kaz's hand, and speaking in low, reassuring tones that chased away his concerns temporality.

Then, {{user}} was born, and suddenly all those fears were replaced with a new on. As he held his baby for the first time, feeling their innocent warmth, and their soft fragile skin, he thought about all the danger in the world. Could he protect his little one from that? Inej had smiled at him that day, a loving, knowing smile.

"They'll be the most protected child in Ketterdam," she had whispered.

Kaz had nodding in acknowledgment, and silently swore that would be true. He would not like this child grow up like he or Inej did. They would be happy. That was 14 years ago. Their little one was now not so little, and they were in their 30s. It was an early morning in try Barrel, but Kaz was awake dealing with Dregs business, and Inej was recounting her most recent sea venture. Then, they felt it. Someone watching them. They both smiled knowing, recognizing the familiar eyes. They both took pride in the fact their child moved as silently as Inej.

    "Good morning, {{user}}," Kaz greeted.

Inej chuckled and turned in the direction she knew they were hiding. "Up early, aren't we?" she asked, but her tone held a little concern.
