As you stepped into the lobby of your boyfriend Nate’s apartment building, nerves twisted in your stomach. You’d come to apologize — for hanging up on him last night after hearing Jenny’s voice in his penthouse — but something about the air felt off.
You pressed the elevator button and watched the numbers climb. With each passing floor, unease settled heavier in your chest.
When the doors finally opened onto the penthouse level, your worst fear came true — Nate was there. With Jenny Humphrey.
He looked up, startled. “What are you doing here?”
“I came to apologize,” you said, forcing the words out evenly. “For not hearing you out last night. Only to find her here, trying to kiss you.”
“Nothing happened,” he said quickly. “Just like nothing happened last night — which I would’ve told you if you hadn’t hung up on me.”
Your voice grew louder. “Then what about everything she said about me? Is that really what you think?”
“Yes. He does,” Jenny cut in before he could answer.
Nate shot her a sharp glare, but you didn’t look away. “I’m talking to Nate, Jenny,” you said coolly.
She sank back onto the couch while Nate turned to you again, the silence between you suddenly louder than words.
